Redefining Success and The Pressure to Succeed
January rolls in, and suddenly, the pressure is on. The noise of "New Year, New Me" fills social feeds… thankfully it’s February. February is all about the heart—not just in the Hallmark sense, but in the way we pour ourselves into what we do. Your business, career, and personal projects should be fueled by passion, not just productivity. The key to long-term success isn’t grinding harder; it’s loving what you do and protecting that love with strong boundaries.

Success Starts with Purpose
Success isn’t just about money or status; it’s about alignment. When your work connects to your deeper "why," it sustains you through the hard days. A 2015 study by Stayer University challenged the definition of success, arguing that relationships, purpose, and fulfillment mattered more than financial gains alone. That tracks—because when your work lacks meaning, no amount of money will make up for the burnout.
Yet, even knowing this, we still feel the pressure. We ask ourselves: Am I doing enough? Am I too busy? Should I be grinding harder or stepping back? The real questions are: What is success actually costing you? Is the work fulfilling me, or is it draining me?
Redefining Success Through Passion and Boundaries
Success as an Author: On paper, I’m a successful author. My book hit #2 in its category on Amazon. But did I sell 3,000 copies like traditionally published authors? No. I didn’t even print 3,000 copies. But did I hit my personal goal? Yes. Because my "why" wasn’t about hitting an arbitrary number—it was about creating something meaningful.
Success as a Business Owner:When I closed my yoga studio, I initially saw it as a failure. But in reality, the decision was about protecting my passion. Running the business consumed me, leaving little time for what I truly loved—teaching, connecting, and growing. Setting the boundary to close wasn’t failure; it was a choice to preserve my energy for what mattered most.
Reality Inventory: A Mindfulness Exercise
Instead of measuring success by someone else’s standards, take a step back.
What does success look like to me?
What is currently costing me too much (time, energy, peace of mind)?
What action can I take to realign with my version of success?
Write it down. Remind yourself that success shifts over time. Quitting something that drains you isn’t failure; it’s making space for something better. Success isn’t about sacrificing yourself for the grind—it’s about loving what you do and building a life that supports that love.
The Takeaway: Success Isn’t About Perfection, It’s About Impact
A former classmate recently launched a blog after losing his job. He called it SUNK (Single. Unemployed. No-Kids.) A witty play on "DINK," but his message was serious: don’t seek comfort in inaction.
Move. Build. Achieve. Learn.
That’s what success is—not being perfect, but making an impact that aligns with your values and purpose. As we navigate 2025, let’s remember:
Success isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing what matters. Fuel your purpose.
